Gita Trelease
This book is a fantasy book but based in the times of the French revolution. Camille Durbonne is a seventeen-year-old girl. When her parents die of smallpox, she has to work “la magie”...magic that uses sorrow to work. Then she starts going to Versailles, transforming herself into a baroness, and quickly makes money. But, when the revolution erupts, Camille must choose between a path that is frail, but whole, and a path that is strong, but broken.
I would recommend this book to girls between the age of 12 and 14. It is interesting, and it helped me understand the French revolution... something that I hadn't studied at school yet. You also might learn a word or two in French (it is based in Paris, and therefore has some French words in...but there's a glossary at the back).
